Spend a Day with Jesus in Scripture

This guided personal retreat is based on John 15:1-17. Jesus said to his disciples, “I appointed you to go and bear fruit, fruit that will last.”

9:00-9:30  Quiet and Still our Souls
Allow yourself to “leave and arrive;” do whatever helps to become quieted, so as to be attentive and receptive.

9:30-12:00  Reflection, Meditation and Prayer

9:30-10:30 Fears about Fruitfulness in my life and Ministry

  • As you think about being fruitful in your life and ministry, what fears do you experience?
  • What makes you feel inadequate? How do you see yourself as incompetent or not up to the task?
  • What makes you feel unworthy? A failure or that you are not “bearing fruit?”
  • What past experiences have contributed to your anxieties? What anxiety do you have over future fruitfulness in life and ministry?
  • What root issues surface as you reflect on these questions and examine your thoughts and fears?
  • Where do you draw confidence and hope from as you think about being fruitful in life and ministry?

10:30-12:00 Turning to Jesus to Listen to Him.

  • Listening to Jesus’ Words to you. John 15:1-8 Read slowly, attentive to the Spirit’s gentle awakening of you to Jesus’ presence and voice.
  • Return to the passage: Look more deeply at the passage. Pay attention to what strikes or engages you. Meditate on it, ask questions about it, keep it before you.
  • Response to Jesus’ Words: journal, pray, sing or sit and savor what he has spoken to you.

12:00-1:30 Lunch in Silence Eat (or fast) and relax during this time. Step away from the text or concentration on it.

1:30-4:00 Reflection, Meditation and Prayer

1:30-2:30 Living on in Love, with Jesus and one another.

  • As you look at the place of Jesus= love in your life, reflect on the following questions:
  • How have you been loved by Jesus? How do you experience that love today?
  • What seems to disconnect what you know about his love with your mind from what you experience of it in your heart?
  • What helps to connect it?
  • Do you feel more comfortable seeing yourself as Jesus’ “servant” or his “friend?” Why?
  • What kind of relationship do you think/feel that Jesus wants with you? What leads you to think/feel this about Jesus?

2:30-4:00 Turning to Jesus to Listen to Him.

  • Listening to Jesus= Words to you: John 15:9-17 Read slowly, attentive to the Spirit’s gentle awakening of you to Jesus’ presence and voice.

  • Response to Jesus’ Words: journal, pray, sing or sit and savor what he has spoken to you

4:00-5:00 Closure

Take a short break and allow your mind to move away from the text.

Write out what words and insights you want to take with you, to let “abide” in you. Express your desires in a written prayer. Give thanks to the Lord who met you today.
